Useful Information
PE
Our PE Days are Wednesdays and Thursdays. The children need to come into school on Wednesdays in their PE kit as our PE session is first thing in the morning. PE kits will go home on a Friday. Please ensure that all items of kit are correctly named.
Reading
Reading books will be changed every day if your child has read and is confident with the book. Please write a short comment in the reading diary and the pages read so we know when to change the book. We also do guided reading. This will involve the children reading in small groups with an adult allowing us to support the children in reading a variety of texts, and discussing key elements of the story. Follow up work involves the children completing comprehension activities to develop their understanding of what they have read.
Common Exception Words
The children have Year 1 Common Exception words that do not follow standard phonics rules and must be learnt by sight. By the end of the year the children need to be able to read these words correctly.

Maths
In Maths we follow White Rose. We revisit the main units of place value, addition and subtraction, and multiplication and division each term, adding in extra challenge each time. Your child will receive a Preview Learning on Fridays that will tell you the Maths focus for the following week.
Phonics
In Year 1 we follow Floppy’s Phonics. This focuses on teaching children the relationship between letters and sounds to develop reading and spelling skills. We will focus on different ways to make the same sound. The phonics focus for the week will be in your child’s Preview Learning. In June the Year 1 children have a Phonics Screening Check where they need to sound out and correctly blend real and pretend words. More information on this will be discussed with you at Parents Evening.
